By explaining to your drivers that you aren’t implementing fleet driver tracking because you don’t trust them, they will be more open to listening to the reasons for using it. If they understand that the end result is to be safer and more efficient, and boost revenue at the same time, they should understand that the benefits will trickle down to them in one way or another. Be transparent in your explanation of the technology and highlight all of its benefits so they don’t make any false assumptions.
HOS247 provides whatever fleet tracking software you need for the types of vehicles in your fleet. In most cases, it is just a small unit that is simply plugged into the vehicle’s OBD port. It will be hidden to prevent tampering, and it is also compatible with vehicles that might not have an OBD port.
In general, drivers know more about the vehicles they drive than the fleet managers do, as they are regularly made aware of the way it operates and any issues the vehicle may be having. Therefore, the role of drivers in regard to fleet management is highly important, and they should be relied upon as a trusted source for tracking vehicle maintenance needs. Training them how to conduct inspections before and after their route is vital not just for meeting DOT requirements, but also so they can detect warning signs that could prevent a vehicle from being put out of service.
The HOS247 fleet tracking service uses an OBDII or J-Bus connected to the ECM. It is through that connection that fleet managers can obtain fault codes and other vehicle diagnostics data.
Drivers and can use the HOS 247 software to create vehicle inspection reports. Any time a driver reports a defect in the vehicle, the fleet manager is notified in their dashboard.
The HOS247 GPS fleet tracking software relies on not only the GPS sensor but the vehicle’s odometer to log the exact distance traveled by a vehicle each day. With that data, a fleet manager can create a report using the HOS247 dashboard to get the total distance traveled by every vehicle in their fleet during any date or range of dates. This makes IFTA filing much simpler and accurate.
Exemptions can be easily claimed using a combination of the vehicle’s location history and the “distance by jurisdiction” report that’s accessible in the HOS247 dashboard.
There is not yet the ability to make the IFTA process fully automated. Nonetheless, the hardest part of the process is made much easier since the GPS fleet tracking system automatically tracks the distance traveled by vehicles in each jurisdiction.
