Omnitracs ELD Review vs. HOS247

‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎HOS247

Omnitracs is a telematics giant that has run the fleet management business for decades. So it is only natural that their ELDs should be amazing, right? Well, users don’t seem to like them so much. To write this Omnitracs ELD review, our team has looked to examine reviews provided by truckers and fleet managers to find out what it is that this company is not delivering and measure their performance against HOS247’s.

First of all, figuring out what ELD options Omnitracs provides for trucking businesses is very confusing. Navigating their portfolio of services can be somewhat overwhelming. One keeps reading names like Omnitracs One, Omnitracs IVG, Omnitracs XRS, Omnitracs Drive, Omnitracs RDC, but it is challenging and time-consuming figuring out what exactly each one is and does.

After a serious research process, we found out that Omnitracs provides a standalone ELD solution (it comes with its own display), called Omnitracs IVG (for Intelligent Vehicle Gateway), as well as a BYOD (bring your own device) option, called Omnitracs XRS.

Omnitracs App Reviews vs. HOS247

Once we cleared that up, we had to figure out which device works with which app. Here is what we found.

Omnitracs App Reviews

Omnitracs Hours of Service integrates with the IVG system so drivers can monitor hours “in near-real-time” (as said by Omnitracs on their brochure) and annotate their logs. It is not a mobile app, but it integrates with HoursGo, to allow drivers access to their logs at any time and from any mobile device. The BYOD option works with its own app, XRS Mobile, which also comes with fleet management options. It is downloaded through a link given to the customer by the provider through SMS or in the user manual.

Out of these three apps, the only one available at the Google Play Store and Apple App Store is HoursGo. This presents an added difficulty for clients who are researching what the user experience is like, since clients don’t have a formal platform to voice their concerns and have to do it either on the comments section of the HoursGo app or on various blogs.

HoursGo users express discomfort with things like the movement sensor malfunctioning, inconvenience of use amongst team drivers, and constant freezing.

You can read more users’ opinions on Omnitracs’s Facebook page, where clients have voiced several complaints about difficulties with the system, customer support, and general dissatisfaction with the company’s service.

Regarding the Hours of Service app for the IVG, drivers report a very slow response time, bad graphics, trouble reviewing logs, and delayed GPS. You can look at user comments posted on the community rating site FreightWaves Ratings.

Omnitracs Customer Support vs. HOS247

ELD providers should be accountable to their clients after the purchase of the device, throughout the whole time the customer is using their product. Dependability is definitely a key characteristic to look for in your elog provider and is best demonstrated through effective technical support.

Omnitracs Customer Support

According to numerous clients’ reviews on the Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and Omnitracs’s Facebook page, Omnitracs’s customer service is hard to reach and account managers fail to call clients back or reply to emails. Customers who have successfully gotten through to a representative complain about them not being able to help or being given inconsistent answers by different people on the other side of the line or not getting a solution to their problems at all.

HOS247 Customer Support

The HOS247 customer support team is a main pillar of our company. Our representatives receive extensive training to address any issues that clients may face, from help on how to download their app to any kind of on-road assistance needed. Technical support is provided in English, Spanish, Polish, and Russian seven days a week. Don’t take our word for it, you can read it yourself from actual users on the Apple and Google Play Stores.

Omnitracs Features vs. HOS247

Both companies have an extensive list of features suitable for fleets. Take into account, however, that companies in general might offer extras, but these mean very little if the essential features required to achieve compliance do not run properly.

Omnitracs Features

As a company specializing in fleet management, ELDs are just one of the many services Omnitracs provides. They are usually bought alongside other devices, software options, and platforms. Although you might think that the more features, the better, the multiple platforms, websites and devices may pose a challenge for users. You can choose to include features such as voice commands, smartphone pairing, route optimization, etcetera. However, various reviews suggest that users do not get to enjoy the benefits of the extra features since the basic ELD features might glitch or crash.

HOS247 Features

We focus on ELD excellency. Our main aim is for our clients to achieve compliance without issues and save them the headache and economic loss caused by fines and missed loads. HOS247 offers highly reliable ELDs as a base product that has been tested extensively to ensure the best user experience and compliance. On top of that, users can scale up with extra features like telematics, fleet maintenance, idle reporting, and the upcoming dashcam option.

Flexible plans whether you have 1 or 500 vehicles

Omnitracs Contracts vs. HOS247

One of the red flags when choosing an ELD provider is the contract length the provider requires. Some companies might demand that clients commit years in advance and, taking into account how rapidly technology changes, this is hardly a good idea.

Omnitracs Contracts

Omnitracs has a wide range of services that they customize according to clients’ needs. Pricing is determined based on the specific requirements of each client. The first thing to take into account is that they mostly cater to fleets, so owner-operators might end up paying more for features that are not really useful for them. Furthermore, according to former users, Omnitracs asks clients to sign 2- or 5- year service contracts. During that time, clients have no buy-out option (except for hefty penalty fees) and are stuck with the package they signed for even if their needs change (which is likely given the crazy world we live in).

HOS247 Contracts

HOS247 tends to all trucking companies, be it owner-operators, a few trucks, or a 500 vehicle fleet. We believe in being our clients’ strategic partners in helping them grow their business and increase their profitability. We also refuse to lock our clients into long-term contracts. We understand that flexibility is important nowadays and that clients might need to scale their plans up or down.

FMCSA Certification

Compliance with the ELD mandate begins with installing an electronic logging device that is FMCSA-approved. However, the FMCSA does not test an ELD before it is included on the list. Manufacturers can self-register by completing a checklist and the FMCSA verifies compliance as a result of constant complaints or other inconsistencies. Carrier’s are responsible for ensuring they choose a registered device.

Omnitracs Certification

Omnitracs has several registered devices on the FMCSA list, including their two main ELD solutions: the IVG and the XRS. This is the IVG registration followed by the full list of Omnitracs’s self-registered devices:

Omnitracs Manual vs. HOS247

Keeping a copy of the ELDs user manual in the truck (be it a hard copy or electronically) is also necessary for compliance. Every manufacturer must provide this document containing all the necessary information about the device and its functioning.

Omnitracs User Guide

There are as many Omnitracs user guides as there are Omnitracs products. As an example, here is the user manual for XRS Mobile on Android.

Why HOS247 is a great alternative to Omnitracs

At HOS247, we created this Omnitracs ELD review to help you decide what is the best option for your business and who offers greater benefits. Based on a comparative analysis of user satisfaction regarding ease of use, quality of technical support, features, and overall performance, we can proudly say that HOS247 is an excellent alternative to Omnitracs if you are looking for quality and reliability. Although Omnitracs has been around for decades, their main focus is fleet management. According to reviews, customers are not satisfied with their elog’s app and functionality, made worse by inefficient technical support. The company offers multiple telematics options; however, ELDs are complex devices that require extreme attention to function optimally, and, taking into account the user reviews above, this just might not be Omnitracs’s main competency.

HOS247 offers an electronic log that is reliable and easy to use so drivers can manage their HOS effortlessly and focus on what really matters: driving. The intuitive HOS 247 app pairs up with a highly reliable hardware option to provide a stable connection. On top of that, our multichannel and multilingual support is available seven days a week. At HOS247, our primary goal is to facilitate ELD compliance so our clients can continue expanding their business.

ELD Mandate in the United States

As part of the Department of Transportation, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is responsible for regulating commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) to ensure safety. That is why, as a result of the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act passed by the U.S. Congress, the FMCSA was required to mandate the use of electronic logs to record hours of service. This measure is meant to reduce highway accidents rates by avoiding driver fatigue.

Nearly all CMVs are subject to this law, fully enforced since December 16, 2019. Some exemptions include driveaway-towaway operators, drivers that maintain RODS for as many as eight days out of a 30-day period, and drivers of vehicles with engines manufactured before the year 2000.

Electronic logging devices ensure compliance with HOS regulations by automatically recording engine data such as miles driven and duration of engine operation. At roadside inspections, officers will verify that a registered ELD is installed, and the driver must provide their HOS reports. Compliance with the ELD law is a primary concern for trucking businesses since the opposite can result in penalties and fines, which is why choosing the right electronic log is so important.

FMCSA Elogs to Achieve Compliance and Boost Productivity
