ELD for Trucks for Sale in the US

An electronic logging device is a federally mandated device for most commercial driver license holders who must maintain records of duty status. These devices help monitor the drivers’ time on the road to meet hours of service compliance. HOS247 is an elog vendor approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

ELD Requirements

Commercial drivers use electronic logbooks to keep records of duty status. The data captured by elogs includes time, date, location, motor carrier, vehicle mileage, engine hours, and driver. The driver’s behavior while driving, such as acceleration, speeding, and unnecessary braking, is also recorded, which can be helpful for fleet owners in the event of accidents. These devices also present truck and engine diagnostic codes that help monitor the truck’s operations and safety. Fleet managers and owners can track the drivers and their trucks with GPS features. They can examine the actual mileage covered, which is vital when presenting IFTA quarterly tax reports and reconciliations.

Flexible plans whether you have 1 or 500 vehicles

An elog must have two accounts: one for the carrier and one for the driver, which must be separated. This also applies to independent operators and independent carriers. The back-end account is accessible to the fleet manager while the driver administers the in-cab account. ELDs can be mounted on a smartphone or any other wireless device that meets the necessary technical specifications.

Every ELD for trucks for sale in the US must meet these requirements. Also, drivers must keep their records for at least six months, and the carrier should ensure that the driver’s privacy is protected.

HOS247 Extra Features

The HOS247 elog is designed to offer more than hours of service and ELD mandate compliance. The ELD device comes with unique features to offer a reliable and positive user experience. These include:

  1. A GPS Tracking System. The HOS247 ELD device is engineered with a GPS powered by a cutting-edge 5G system that helps maintain clear sight of the fleet. The system does not rely on cellular data to calculate and process the information.
  2. IFTA Mileage Calculations. The data gathered by the electronic logging device helps fleet managers and truck owners monitor and calculate drivers’ mileages. This makes it easier to compile the IFTA quarterly tax report and reconciliations.
  3. Faster Dispatch. An effective dispatch program equals improved job efficiency and general business growth. With HOS elogs, dispatchers can keep better track of the vehicles in the fleet to assign loads more efficiently.

Exemptions to the ELD Mandate and HOS Rules

The ELD mandate applies to the majority of the commercial carriers and haulers, including buses, trucks, and semi trucks that are required to keep RODS. However, there are limited exemptions, which include:

  1. Short-haul drivers.
  2. Drivers using paper RODs for not more than eight days every 30 days.
  3. Drivers of any commercial vehicles manufactured before 2000.
  4. Drive-away-tow-away operations drivers, as the vehicle towed is regarded as the product in transit.

Moreover, there are exemptions to the hours of service rules introduced by the FMCSA to aid improve safety on the roads.

  1. The 30-minute break rule applies to short-haul carriers qualifying under the provisions of the 100 air-mile radius and those who qualify for the provisions of the 150 air-mile radius but operating non-CDL vehicles.
  2. The 16-hour short-haul drivers’ exemption allows qualified drivers to extend the 16-hour driving window from 14 once in seven successive days.
  3. The adverse driving condition exemption allows carriers to add extra working hours to their maximum driving limit, provided the drivers or motor carrier could not predict the conditions before the trip started.
  4. The direct emergency assistance allows the driver to complete their journey in an emergency without violation of any provisions of the ELD mandate. Under this exemption, an emergency can only be declared by the FMCSA, State governors, or the President.

Every ELD for sale must support these exemptions.

How to Make Sure your ELD is Compliant

When carriers are looking for an ELD for sale, they have the responsibility to ensure that the one they choose is registered with the FMCSA. The best way to do this is to check if the device appears on the registration list available on the FMCSA’s website. We also recommend signing up on their portal for regular updates on the listing and delisting of ELDs.

Compliance with the ELD mandate comes with numerous benefits, such as:

  1. Increased efficiency as a result of reduced paperwork for the RODS.
  2. Provides room for better planning and execution.
  3. Improved road safety that reduces losses from accidents.
  4. Enhanced work ethic.
  5. Reduced operating costs.
